Cystic or neoplastic lesions of the jaws often present incidentally on radiographs or as painless swelling.

Accurate diagnosis and complete removal are essential to prevent recurrence or damage to adjacent structures.

Referral is recommended when:

  • A well-defined or multilocular radiolucency is noted on OPG or CBCT.

  • The lesion is expanding, causing tooth displacement, or involves the inferior alveolar canal.

  • Histopathological assessment is required following biopsy or aspiration.

In an oral and maxillofacial surgery setting, these lesions are treated with enucleation, curettage, or resection under sterile conditions.

CBCT imaging and histology guide definitive management and long-term follow-up.

When to refer to AWOMS Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery: Any radiolucent lesion of uncertain origin or cystic change in the jaw - early referral ensures accurate diagnosis and safe removal.
