Immediate Implant Placement or Ridge Preservation

When a tooth requires extraction and future implant placement is planned, early referral allows optimal timing and site management. Performing ridge preservation or immediate implant placement at the time of extraction helps maintain bone volume and reduces treatment time.

Referral is recommended when:

  • A tooth is non-restorable and the patient is considering an implant.

  • Bone loss or infection is minimal, allowing possible immediate implant placement.

  • Ridge preservation is required to maintain the ideal contour for future prosthetics.

In an oral and maxillofacial surgery setting, extraction and grafting can be completed simultaneously, often under a bulk-billed or no-gap arrangement.

This approach minimises resorption, avoids secondary surgery, and may shorten the overall treatment timeline by several months.

When to refer to AWOMS Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery: Any patient planning an implant before tooth extraction - early referral allows grafting or immediate implant placement at the same appointment for the best result.
