Pre-prosthetic Surgery for Ridge Augmentation or Alveoloplasty
When patients require prosthetic rehabilitation, such as dentures or implants, the jaw ridge may need modification to ensure optimal fit, function, and aesthetics. Pre-prosthetic surgery, including ridge augmentation or alveoloplasty, reshapes or builds up the alveolar bone to create a stable foundation for prosthetic appliances.
Referral is advised when:
The alveolar ridge is severely resorbed, irregular, or deficient.
Existing bone morphology prevents proper denture or implant placement.
The patient requires significant bone contouring for comfort or aesthetics.
In an oral and maxillofacial surgery setting, these cases are assessed with clinical examination and 3D imaging to plan precise bone modification. Advanced techniques such as autogenous bone grafting, allografts, or guided bone regeneration can be employed to optimise outcomes.
Referral ensures a safer, more predictable result and reduces the risk of post-prosthetic complications, discomfort, or instability of dentures or implants.
When to refer to AWOMS Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery: Any patient with significant alveolar ridge deficiency or irregularity where standard prosthetic adaptation is likely to fail.
