Sinus Lift or Posterior Maxilla Bone Deficiency

Following upper molar extraction, sinus pneumatization and bone resorption often reduce the available bone height for implant placement.

When the residual ridge height is less than 5–6 mm, a sinus lift or bone augmentation is usually required to provide adequate implant stability.

Referral is appropriate when:

  • CBCT or OPG imaging shows limited vertical bone height near the sinus floor.

  • A patient has a history of sinus pathology requiring careful surgical planning.

  • Previous implant attempts have failed due to inadequate bone support.

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons perform both lateral and transcrestal sinus lift procedures using biocompatible graft materials under sterile conditions.

By restoring bone height, they create a stable foundation for long-term implant success while avoiding sinus complications.

When to refer to AWOMS Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery: Any posterior maxilla case with <5 mm bone height or proximity to the sinus floor on imaging - early referral ensures safe planning and predictable graft outcomes.
